Estonia Mailbox Shed

"Estonia Mailbox Shed"
9x12 acrylic on canvas
Available through DPW gallery/auction

This month the Virtual Paintout (VPO) is visitIng Estonia, which is a small country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is a very interesting area to visit. I did much exploring - lots of greenery!

When I first painted this, I had no idea what type of shelter it was. It looked to be a simple shelter with news letters taped to the wall. But I loved the stone work, and of course, the red structure and the green surrounding it. My original google street view can be seen here.

It was only after I was done, and while I was trying to find a name for this piece, did I go back to the google map & zoom in further. That was when I discovered that what I thought was newsletters, or pieces of paper, are actually mailboxes. Further search told me that the orange/red box within is the box for outgoing mail. The others are obviously receiving mailboxes for the various people in the neighborhood. If you click here you will see the interior from the opposite viewpoint, and can see the mailboxes within.
