The Pavilion

"The Pavilion"
9x12 acrylic on canvas
Available through DPW gallery/auction

The location on this is the Kinmem Island - which was a previous VPO challenge. I had taken various screen shots of that island while exploring in Google maps, and put aside a few for painting later. Two Trees was one of those saved to paint later, as is this one. The original Google map view can be seen here.

Again, fascinated by all the greenery, the shadows, the highlights. And I was determined to limit the details - in fact, except for a few tree branches, the only detail is on the pavilion & it's fence. This is probably one of the most impressionistic paintings I've done in a long time. Now I want to do more!!

When I translated the Chinese for this view, it came up as Taihu Lake Recreation Area. It seemed a very calming, very tranquil location. But if you turn 180 degrees in the map, you will see what appears to be a plane, a tank and a large cylinder (bomb). I think this may be a war museum & memorial, as judging by the wall on the building with countless names (in Chinese) on it. It makes this pavilion seem an almost solemn spot.
