House of Prayer

Acrylic on 9x12 canvas panel

This is my 2nd submission to this months VPO in Detroit. The original google link can be seen here

Trying to keep to my promise of finding the good in Detroit (& not just the abandoned or neglected), I found this wonderful church on the corner of Rosa Parks Blvd & South La Salle Gardens. Its grand architecture is striking up against that blue sky. This facade is on the Rosa Parks Blvd side entrance while the front is around the corner. I was thrilled to find this but then I sent my little google man around the corner & found the front doors of the church boarded up. Windows broken - no stained glass to be seen. Even the building next door, which looks to once have been part of the church, is boarded up. What I thought was a great find of the good turned out to be yet another abandoned place.

What would cause the congregation of that church to cease? Were they the people who once lived in the abandoned homes? What will become of this structure? The vines growing up it's sides, which I once thought were quaint, is actually mother nature taking back what is hers.

Can't help but wonder whether this building, this house of prayer, can it be saved!

It sure is beautiful, Nancie! I've been working on a piece for the VPO but I doubt it will be finished in time. Mox nix. It isn't as pretty as this piece, that is for sure! This would make one gorgeous if renovated home, wouldn't it?

This is a beautiful painting Nan. I really like that your mission is to find a positive spot to paint in Detroit. How sad that the church is abandoned though.
Your composition is really nice and I love how you've painted the foliage. Your description of the big tree is wonderful.

Love the realism and composition. Abandoned or not, you made it look majestic.
