This is a rather large piece - 16x20, with 1-1/2 inch gallery edges. The painting continues on all 4 sides. The background is a vivid, deep blue which helps to make the flower colors pop. It's a rather impressive piece & demands attention wherever it is hung.

Gladiolus flowers - are beautiful, multi-color flowers that grow & bloom up a tall stalk. They grow from bulbs and become quite tall. They usually require staking of some kind to prevent them from falling over in the wind or rain. Right now they are in bloom throughout my neighborhood and for sale at many of the flower stands & markets. You will see them wrapped together sitting in their buckets of water, waiting for someone (like me) to purchase & bring them home. I have a large vase in the living room right now with 2 bunches of these sitting - one a gorgeous purple blend while the other has a beautiful yellow with red throat flower.

I do not have a great deal of luck growing these in the yard. They do not tolerate the cold winters we have, so they need to be dug up each year & replanted each Spring (something I haven't had much time, or patience for, in the past). So I buy bouquets of them when they are in season & delight in watching the flowers open up - from the bottom up - on their tall stems.

I had a devil of a time trying to photograph this. No matter what lighting I had this in I just could not get the colors as deep as they really are! The background is darker than it appears in the photo, which makes the flowers pop more than they show here.
