Stay Within the Lines

Acrylic on 9x12 canvas sheet
Available through DPW gallery/auction

This was a major challenge and something I took on for myself. Not just the shading, the various colors, the lines, the arcs and highlights. Toss in the perspective on each & every crayon!!! This was a true test for me, and this painting took me well over a week of work. I found I could only work on 3 (maybe 4) crayons in one evening and then I needed to walk away. The following evening I would tackle it again, painting maybe 2 more new ones, but then tweaking on the completed ones again. Even now my eye sees things to tweak further!!

As a child I loved my crayons, and found nothing more relaxing than to sit down with a coloring book & a box of crayons. In fact, when my nieces were younger, they would invite me to sit & color with them. I never turned them down! I wish they were still young - seems the magical age of "teenager" tends to reclassify crayons & coloring books as child stuff.

I will say that this is full of color, and is bright & cheerful - just what crayons mean to me. So in that respect, the painting is successful. Now, about the perspective....... :-O

Sigh...so wonderful, Nan! I always loved my crayons too and my mom never would buy me that big old box of 64 that I liked...at least not until I got older. And I still will sit with a grandchild when they ask and color right along side of them. I think this is fabulous!

Magical! I love the purple crayon! I can see where this would be a difficult challenge. You did well!

I loved the smell of a new box of Crayola crayons, and the new points on each one. They were never as beautiful after that first day.

I am wowed by the fact that you got the crayon colors so spot on. Beautiful job! I remember hearing the admonition to color within the lines when I was a kid - but when I received a 'paint by number' oil kit, I always went over the lines to make it look more original. Thanks for the memories Nan, and love this painting.
