Unfurling

"Unfurling"
Acrylic on 9x12 canvas panel
Available through DPW gallery/auction

Those of you who have followed my blog know that I have a fondness for my Bleeding Heart plants. I have painted their leaves & flowers numerous times and am quite sure I will paint them again. There is just something about this delicate looking flower & plant that captivates me. I love how the light catches the greens & reds and how their branches wave in the wind.

I have 3 of these plants in my garden - 2 pink & 1 white. They are pretty old now, 1 of the pinks is probably as old as the garden (which I dug & planted back in the 1980's after I bought the house).

I look for the shoots of these plants in early spring - I know for sure that the winter is over when I see them starting to sprout up. And they grow quickly! Then suddenly these tiny red flowers begin on the branches, opening up to these tiny red hearts. The white version I have is identical to the red, except that the flowers are entirely white. It is not as robust In growth, but still has those lovely green leaves.

I am so looking forward to seeing these flower again this year!

I am not sure I have ever seen these beautiful flowers in real life, just in paintings.
