House Gift

Commissioned Piece - NFS
9 x 12 Acrylic on canvas panel

This is a commissioned Home Portrait and the client asked to do her home as it is decorated for the holidays. She had sent multiple photos, some with snow, some without. And some were daytime and some were night. All of the photos gave great insight to the house, the decorations, and the whole scene -- some showed a yard full of additional decorations & lights.

I studied the photos for quite a few days as I tried to decide what to paint. Although the daytime photos would be easier to handle, I felt that the decorations showed better at night. The home is illuminated by spotlights, and it's normal color is white - so it wouldn't get lost in the darkness of nighttime.

I don't normally do nocturnal paintings (and note to self to do more of them as they are an interesting challenge for colors & values), so this setup challenge #1. Next decision - with or without the snow? Again I opted to go with the snow - snow & holidays go hand-in-hand in the Northeast, so that was another challenge maker. After all, snow is not just white!

I also chose to crop out the additional items on the lawn and also a large flag pole with an American flag - as they distracted from the house. After all, it is a home portrait - so I wanted to capture the holiday spirit this client puts into their house dressings. The nighttime sky is not solid black (as it may show in this photo) but a dark mix of blue, and I left it mottled to give the sky some depth.

I'm rather happy with this painting. It was a challenge, it was out of the box for me, and it was nice to do something so festive!

It is a lovely house and quite festive indeed. I always wished I could have raised my daughters in a lovely family home like this one.
