Originally painted in 2012, these little candy gems are synonymous with Valentine's Day. Who doesn't remember these little messages of love (or angst)!

I can remember being a child in Kindergarden when we were all suppose to bring in Valentine cards - punch out cardboard pieces that had hearts & lots of red things & sparkles on them. I remember my poor mother the night before, helping to get all the cards done. She said that I had to send a valentine to every child in my class - all 35 of them! I remember asking her "everyone? Are you sure?" - she said yes, no child should feel left out. 

So the next day I went off to school with all 35 valentine cards. We dropped them off in a large, aluminum clad box that had hearts all over it. The teacher then went through the box and distributed the cards to each child. 

Some were so pretty and some had lots of sparkles - something that was very exciting to a young child of 5. But I have to say, I received far less than 35 cards. For all my mother's hard work to make sure no child felt left out, her own child was! I carried my 15 cards home with tears in my eyes. My mother looked at them, then sat me down & explained that the 15 cards I got meant more than the 35 cards that some of the other children got. "Why?" Because, she said, those 15 cards are from children that really do like you! While the others got 35 cards because they were suppose to, and they have no idea who really likes them & who doesn't.  Ah ha! Lesson learned, "less is more!" 

So when I painted this, I simply smiled. I couldn't tell you who those 15 cards were from - that was a long time ago. But I can tell you I never received a better Valentine's gift than my mothers explanation!

Artists note: yesterdays post of the Rendition tree has given me an idea for my 2014 Sun Art. This is exciting as I've been wrestling with this painting challenge for a while. Now, if I can get my hands to create what my mind's eye sees. Challenge isn't over ..... yet!
