I was in the mood to paint wildflowers this weekend. As I drove along the road leading to our lake house, I was struck by the number of wildflowers that were in bloom. We've been having a week of severe summer weather - heat, humidity, 100 degrees - and still the wildflowers flourished & bloomed. I knew I had to paint them. 

When I decided to paint these little flower batches, I realized I did not have the size canvas I wanted. So off to the store I went where I found a package of 5x7 panels. Then, on my way home, I stopped at various places along the dirt road to take some photos with my phone. I wanted them for reference. These paintings were not sketched - simply painted, freehand with a palette knife. 

This whole experience reminded me of being a very young child and picking a colorful bouquet of wildflowers for my mother. Wildflower is another name for weed to many people - but my mother never said a bad word about them. She would smile, then ooh & aah over them and I would run outside & pick more! This time I painted them rather than pick them (although I was tempted to make a small bouquet). But I had to laugh, because the whole time I was walking the road, taking pictures, and then painting these flowers - I kept recalling that one line in The Color Purple that I love.

Because of the sentimental association I have with these, I will be uploading them as my challenge submission to the ACG for the challenge "Sentimental Journey." (maybe make a collage of the 5 for the submission).

This was an enjoyable diversion from my more detail oriented paintings. I think I will do days like this every more often - it's a nice way to enjoy "coloring" with my paints. 

And yes, I noticed the color Purple!
