The Red Door

Acrylic on 9x12 canvas sheet
Available through DPW gallery/auction

Previously painted in February 2010, this scene has the rich greens of summer surrounding the small cottage. The original photo had a green door on the cottage, which I felt was lost in amongst all the greenery surrounding it. I changed the frames & door to be red, then added splashes of red in a few areas of the foliage to balance things. But I think my favorite is the cast shadow on the roof & front of the building.

I so love this piece, Nan. To have a little home nestled amongst the trees is my favorite of all dreams. This is beautiful! The red? Inspired!

Beautiful foliage! I love how the trees look dark to the right of the building. And the shadows are terrific. The reds bring great life to the painting!

I remember a post I read somewhere by a painter talking about his landscape teacher. The teacher would always ask about a landscape painting, "where's the red?" It was like his mantra. I have found that adding reds to my landscapes gives them more life. It looks wonderful with the greens.

Thanks Sherry, I know how you love greens and this one has quite a bit of it. Virginia you are so right. The reds do bring life into the painting, and they are so complementary to the greens. Thank you for your comments.
