Eureka Forest

Acrylic on 9x12 canvas sheet
Available through DPW gallery/auction

This was done for this month's VPO which is Eureka, Calif. Here is the link to the Google map view.

I have found that I am beginning to introduce different colors in my work. Where before I strove to try & recreate the visual that I saw, now I work more at conveying the feeling of what I see.

The trees are a combination of greens, yellow oxide and canary yellow - while the trunks are a mix of burnt umber and cad orange. To try & contrast the cool, blue sky I added a warm, red oxide to the ground shadows. Additional areas to the trees were added with burnt sienna.

I wanted to convey the contrast of California - where it can be both cold and warm in the same area. Overall I think it makes for an interesting visual.

This is beautiful, Nan! I love the point of view, as though looking up a bit. Love the way you've extended the front trees off the paper, creating height. Such lovely colors too!

This is really lovely Nan. I'm still trying to find a scene I want to paint for Eureka. You picked a good one and
I really like the colors you chose.
