The Witches Are Coming!

"Every year on Halloween, the witches arrive on the scene,
With capes and hats of every hue, black & red, green & blue,
And they come for the cause, they come just because,
Pink ribbons they wear, from their hearts they share."

Here's a link to a YouTube of the witches, done in 2009.

In upstate NY, there is an annual tradition for Halloween. The women dress as witches and travel the circuit of restaurants & bars. The establishments, and their customers, donate to the collection which, in turn, is donated to Breast Cancer Research to find a cure. It started as a small group of friends one year, then grew by a few more each year until they needed to rent a limo. The next year, it was a bus. The following year, 2 buses. And the year I took this photo, it was 3 full buses -- 150 witches total, that made the effort for this very worthy cause. It was quite a sight to see them all, gathered at the one location on a roadway, as they waited for their transportation. Cars slowed down & beeped their horns, or pulled over so cameras could capture the sight. After all, in today's day & age, how often do you see 150 witches in one place?

Now each year the area anticipates the arrival of the witches - who have now stopped the buses & actually gather at the local hotel ballroom. Tickets are sold, raffles done - all proceeds for the charity.

And the chanting has started already, I can hear the conversations at breakfast buffets or dinner tables in restaurants. "The Witches are Coming! The Witches are Coming!"

This is my submission to the Calypso Moon Artist challenge for October (Calyspo is actually doing 2 this month, my 2nd will follow at  a later time). This same painting is also being submitted to the Artist helping Artist monthly challenge as my art for the month of October.

I love this! Your block colors make these witches seem even more mysterious! Good luck to those high heel clad witches. Maybe that's why they stopped walking and rented their own place?

Thank you both. The high heels, yes they seem a bit much (for me, getting old ya know). But they stopped taking the buses because they became unreliable (breaking down) and the cost of them was eating into the contributions.

The local hotel donates the use of their ballroom, and with all the witches in 1 place - the hotel fills the place with everyone who goes there to see them. The cost to attend goes to the donations, while the drinks people buy go to the hotel. Really, a win-win for all!

What a wonderful take on Halloween. Your explanation was not needed to love the painting but added to the appreciation. Keep painting!

Love your painting of a witches convention - or is it a coven gathering, in any event I am glad you are all using your 'magic' for a good cause.

Wonderful how your simplification made a complex composition work. That great simplification seems to run through all your work.
