The Sentinel

This was done for the recent Wet Canvas monthly challenge called Different Strokes. I know for a fact that dogs love boats. Our dog, a long-haired doxie, can't wait to go for a boat ride in the summer. He's the first one down on the dock & then on the boat. He jumps up onto the front-most seat and gets himself in position to go. If we take too long to launch, he will give us the look of "come on, let's go!" And then, while we are cruising, he's got himself propped up on the seat with his ears flying in the breeze. He's a happy puppy for sure.

When I saw this photo for the challenge, I knew I had to paint it. The dog is in position, like so many other dogs I see at the lake. The front lookout, the sentinel.

So very sweet! Such a good ol' dog. I just love it. Once again, you captured the moment!

I love it! Love the background!

I have always been a cat person until my married daughters got dogs for their kids. Now I love dogs, too.

Nancie great work. The background looks great with all the dark shadows on the foliage. The light on the dog is also beautifully done.

well done. May I go too? ;)

Thank you all. I wanted the background to be more subtle and not compete with the dog which is my main subject. I reworked the light on the dog numerous times, so thank you for your comments on that!

I love this scene and your dog is wonderful.

Wonderful piece. Makes you want to go relaxing in a boat, floating about, while the dog is looking forward to where the boat is heading to.

I love paintings that tell a story, and this one does! You know that dog thinks the boat ride is just for him.
