Swiss Cabin

I just finished this one for the A Day Not Wasted challenge for this month. As always, Lee uploads one of his wonderful photographs for people to paint. He is currently exploring Europe/Asia and has uploaded many shots he has taken from various places. If you haven't yet seen his work, click on the link above. I promise you will enjoy seeing his journey.

For this painting, I changed the composition. Went from horizontal to a vertical format and cropped in close on the front of the building. It's the area I was most intrigued with, so I made it my subject. In Lee's original photo you will see that the scenery behind the building is outstanding, but for a painting I thought it would compete with the building for attention. Hence the crop - I could almost do a second painting of the scenery only - maybe one day I will.

This building reminds me of some of those I saw while visiting the Adirondack Museum in NY State. I recommend the visit for anyone as they have preserved so much of the Adirondacks past, be it equipment, photos and of course, the history. Many of these older buildings are on the grounds and are part of the walking tour. They are a true study in the skill of their builders & designers. The Museum is in the northern part of NY state on a beautiful lake called Blue Mountain Lake. Visit it when you can, you will not be disappointed.

Nancie, I love how you changed the composition! Your painting is really beautiful, and much more engaging than the photograph. Very nice job!

Thank you everyone. I loved the textures & shadows on the building and just knew I had to crop in close to make it the main subject.

I said, "Wow", out loud when I saw this. My husband asked, "What?" to which I replied, "Oh, Nancie's done it again!" I love your work!

Love the Mountains in the background. Their color makes the cabin pop.
