Continuing with the theme of "Flowers = Spring" is another larger floral painting I did of day lilies. Much of what I paint needs to have the highlights & darklights (such a word?) enhanced - I have a tendency to be too subtle in my highlights & shadows. I played more with highlights in this, but also worked at fading out the distant blooms in the background, as I tried to create more depth. The background is a very deep, dark violet to contrast the red/orange/yellow of the flowers.

Very nice Nancie. Puts one in mind of sring. something we in Dubois never really get to see. It is usually winter here till the 4th of July then a few weeks of summer than...
Actually we get 3 seasons here. last winter, this winter and next winter.

You did indeed do well with the dimming of the rear flowers; it certainly does give that depth! I am quite surprised that the background is a dark violet color; I thought it was black!! These are beautiful flowers and one of my favorite wildfowers! Sigh...spring...will it never come??

Gary - I totally understand when you describe your seasons. We have a second home in the Adirondacks in upstate NY. There we have Winter, Mud Season, Summer, Leaf Season - then back to winter!
Sherry - hang in there. Spring is coming, and I think it will come early this year (despite what the groundhog said).
Joan - so glad you enjoyed your visit. I enjoyed painting Lombard Street. I hadn't been out there since the early 70s, and this was like taking a quick trip back.
