It's New Years Eve and I'm feeling a bit retrospective tonight. I thought about the past year & how my art progressed in 2013. What events did I have that triggered art - all the while I have an eye on 2014 and wondering what the new year will bring.
Someone posted a great saying on Facebook tonight. It said "Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Make it a good one." What a wonderful way to look at things, and I have decided to see 2014 that very way. And this blog will help me stay focused on it.
In review of 2013, I can think of 3 major events of the past year that altered or affected my art.
Firstly, I lost my dear friend Peg in the spring. It wasn't suppose to happen. She had had cancer, she had beaten it, all was well. But it came back & took her quickly. It wasn't suppose to have happened that way -- but it did. Her favorite color was yellow so I did a painting after she passed, "Weeping Sunflower"
And I wish everyone a safe, happy, & healthy New Year!

Secondly, I branched out on my art into the real world as I call it. I arranged an ongoing art project with a local library, where I create commissioned home portraits. This has been a great project that I hope will continue in the new year, and I plan to grow it further by reaching out to other towns as well. What sparked this adventure? Two home portraits I did of 1930 homes of a neighboring town: Blue Striped Awnings & Round Porch. It is where I discovered my love of painting architecture.
Thirdly, my first art show in October. I did two paintings specifically for this show: "The Mansion" and it's associated outbuilding "The Carriage House." Interestingly enough, these 2 buildings are located in the same town where the ongoing Home Portrait project is taking place.

Nancie, I hope 2014 is a great year for you and I like your resolve to count it as a blank book and starting with a positive. I love your homes series and while I find it a personal type of art, I sure do love it. I think many states have a Rte. 66 group dedicated to that highway. I wonder if you could contact them about doing some of the still intact buildings that cropped up when that highway came through...I know here in IL there is such a group and I know that in the town we used to live (Odell), there is a wonderful gas station still standing. Just a thought...
