Four Leaves

The past couple of mornings have been chilly. That, and the shorter days, and the fact that we're in September - all make me realize that the seasons are getting ready to change. Next comes one of the prettiest seasons - Autumn. I look forward to the cooler temperatures and the colorful leaves we get here in the Northeast.

Do you remember collecting pretty color leaves as a child? I can remember finding different colors and shapes and gathering them like they were a bouquet of flowers. I would collect them on my way home from school, walking the few blocks and looking at all the leaves on the ground - trying to find just the right size and color to add to my bouquet. Then I would give them to my mother when I walked into the house - handing her my bouquet as she would ooh and aah at the wonderful colors. Every fall I am reminded of that time when I see the leaves change color on the trees and start their "rainfall" down. And I still look for the best ones to ooh and aah over, as I remember my mom and her endless enthusiasm for my bouquet of leaves. A bouquet she saw almost every day, but each day was like it was a brand new feast for the eyes. She feined that excitement so well, making each bouquet like it was the first. I smile now, as I look back on those days with my adult eyes, and see them for what they were. Would I change those moments for a piece of reality? Not a chance!

Your mom sounds like she was wonderful, Nancie. I too love the autumn (it is my favorite of all the seasons). And I do so love autumn leaves.
