Working Farm

Acrylic on 9x12 canvas sheet
Available through DPW gallery/auction

Originally done in September 2010, I just redid a bit of the shadow & buildings. Just wasn't happy with the original rendering - like this new version much better.

This farm is located in update NY State, and yes, it is a working farm. One of the few larger ones in our area, it is primarily a dairy farm. Often, when driving past, herds of cows can be seen grazing in the fields that run along the side & down to the road. One particular day, with blue skies overhead, I had to pull over & take a few photos. The red & white trimmed barn against the summer greens and then crowned with that beautiful, blue sky. Had to try & capture it - and paint it.

A working farm is never glamourous - it is hard, hard work. Long days, hard labor, and always trying to work with mother nature. When it's successful, it is a wonderful feeling. When it's not, it can be heart wrenching.

What is successful? Well, that's really up to each farmer, and how he defines the word success. It's not always about the money in this line of work, it's about who you are - what you do - and what you feel. It's about where you come from  - your father, grandfather, great-grandfather was a farmer - and about where you are going - leaving a piece of this land to your son, daughter, grandchild. And, of course, self satisfaction.

I think that historical sense of the farm passing through the generations is one of the reasons that I've always wished I'd been born to a farm family. It IS super hard work, before sun-up to after sun-down every single day. This is one beautiful homestead, Nan!
