Acrylic on 9x12 canvas sheet
A friend of mine is the person in this painting - he is an avid fisherman. When someone posted this image on Facebook of him out during the early morning mist, I knew I had to ask permission to paint it. All of that orange & red was just too enticing! Not to mention the darker ripples in the water.
The mist was handled by putting on light orange & wiping it off. Then again with white, and quickly wiping it off. I found, at least with acrylic paints, this leaves a "film" over the background colors - similar to a watercolor "wash" would do. But even the most opaque of Acrylic colors will not thin enough for a wash, at least I find in the acrylics, so the wipe off method seems to work best for this type of look.
The shadows & all the very dark areas were done with a dark purple, as were the water ripples. Dioxazine purple is transparent enough that it does a wonderful wash over the oranges in the water. The combination of the 2 colors gave it a rich brown tone that added some depth to the foreground water.
I found the mist the most difficult to do in this, and I think I will work mist into some other landscape paintings so I can practice it more. This painting was both fun & challenging - a good combination for art!

It is a beautiful piece and one that would be a fabulous gift for your fisherman friend. I loved hearing about your process with the mist also.
