Azalea

Acrylic on 16x20 gallery wrapped stretched canvas
Available for sale through my DPW gallery

This is another one of the larger paintings that I've started doing of recent. I've wanted to start branching out from my 9x12 canvas sheets into a more traditional canvas style (gallery wrapped stretched canvas) and size (16x20). This larger size had been my favorite back in my earlier days of painting and I can see why I liked it so much. It's a great size without being too large.

This azalea was a plant I had purchased last spring. It was filled with these wonderful white & red-edged flowers that lasted for quite a while. I had planned to plant the shrub in my garden but could not find the right spot for it. It survived all summer in it's pot and when the fall season started I knew I had waited too long to plant it. I transplanted it to a new pot & brought it indoors, gave it fertilizer and cared for it best as I could. But I've come to find now, this spring, that it did not survive and is gone. Thankfully I took photos of these gorgeous flowers, and thought it would make a great subject for a large painting.

Prints of the original photo are available through my Fine Art America gallery (link is on the right side of my blog). The painting is offered for sale through my DPW gallery.

Really beautiful, Nan - kind of Georgia O'Keefe-ish, but definitely your style. I really like it.

It is indeed beautiful, Nan. I found myself starting to move toward the screen to smell it! Love the size too.

Thank you everyone. I loved painting this one, those lovely reds with the creamy whites was just too much fun! And thank you all for the comments on the crop I chose - I do love that zoomed in look at flowers. Georgia O'Keefe-ish - I had't realized that, but Jean, you're right!

I love the colors against the dark background. Really beautiful.

And I'm sorry about the plant. I have killed many with good intentions.
