Translucent Edges

Acrylic on 9x12 canvas sheet
Available through DPW gallery/auction

The snow season this year is starting slowly, dropping only a dusting or an inch from time to time. And those light coatings of snow melt quickly in the daylight, especially if the temps get above freezing - as they have been lately. And as it melts, it reveals the leaves, pine needles and pinecones that are beneath the snow.

Some days it only partially melts, leaving small clumps of frozen cold surrounding the warmer earth tones of the various items on the ground. I can remember being captivated as a child, spending what felt like forever, studying the snow - it's edges almost translucent. That is what I tried to capture here - the translucent edges.

Il n'est pas aisé de peindre la neige et surtout celle qui a tendance à fondre ou alors donner l'aspect du gel!
Vous y avez réussi avec brio !
Très jolie peinture. Un beau travail également sur la pomme de pin.
Gros bisous

You captured that very well, the painting is gorgeous, so fresh and 'alive'! Is it oil or watercolor?

Well done, Nan. I like how you've captured the grasses and matted leaves. The colors are perfect and you did indeed get those translucent edges of snow.

Thank you all, I appreciate your comments. Happy Holidays to all. Jane - I didn't realize I had missed the tag on this, it is done in acrylics.

Love this painting Nan. It also reminded me of studying the things you could see just under the ice. I love the composition and colors are lovely. I believe you achieved your objective. Nice painting!

Hello Nan. It's an beautiful painting. Have you been in the woods for it! It's so real.

Thank you again. Renate - in upstate New York, it is not uncommon to get very early seasonal snow and very late snow also. That snow tends to melt quickly leaving patches such as this. I'm always "nature walking" and studying things as I walk, so I guess the answer is yes, I was in the woods! Thanks for asking.

I've seen that exact thing--the partially melted snow with translucent edges. You did a wonderful job capturing that image. And I love your post. Beautifully written as well!
