Vows

Recently a cousin of mine was married. She and her long-time companion decided to "tie the knot" finally, and she was as giddy as a school girl. They planned a ceremony in Las Vegas with only a couple of close family members. I did not attend, but was there in spirit.

What makes this story so touching is that days before the weekend trip, the groom had a sudden health issue that sent him into the hospital. Preliminary tests were done, and although a definite diagnosis was not made, the probability was high that he had some form of cancer.

The doctors wanted to run more tests. The couple decided that they wanted to go through with their wedding. And so, their vows became even more poignant - particularly "for better or worse, in sickness & health."  And I knew I needed to paint something, to express what I felt.

Now the Calypso Moon Challenge this month is to paint something combined with music - to select something on YouTube and let it influence you. Music has always been a big part of my life, so this was difficult to choose. I have so many, way too many, songs I love to isolate only one. I needed input from others, so I asked on my Facebook page to my FB friends "pick 1 song, only 1." I got a variety of answers (not near as many as I thought), but one cousin (a different branch of the family than the wedding cousin) said emphatically "Get Here by Oleta Adams."

Wow, I put this on and it was just perfect. Exactly the power, emotion & desire that I needed to paint Vows.  So I played it, over & over, and painted & painted. Click here for a link to the video & song.

I am submitting this to Calypso as this months challenge. And I dedicate this to the bride & groom, "may God bless you on your journey and challenges."

Ah, Nancie. Sometimes life's vagaries are simply overwhelming and too much. I am so glad your cousin and her husband decided to seek comfort and solace, joy and peace in each other. This is a touching piece and one I hope will be a fabulous gift to them.

What a beautiful sentiment of love in all its grandeur. Your painting is a reflection. Trying to live the joy of the moment: not so easy ....
