Garden of the Gods

This one was done for the Studio Atelier challenge, a wonderful scene from Colorado Springs. I have never travelled to this area, at least not yet. But my husband has and has raved about the scenery. I can tell why - those large walls of rock are just too gorgeous in color to not paint! Much thanks to Wikipedia, as I was able to do a little research as to the origin of the name "Garden of the Gods." (it intrigued me) I left the links from Wikipedia in, just in case you want to venture further.

The name of the park dates back to August 1859 when two surveyors helping to set up nearby Colorado City were exploring the nearby areas. Upon discovering the site, one of the surveyors, M. S. Beach, suggested that it would be a "capital place for a beer garden." His companion, the young Rufus Cable, awestruck by the impressive rock formations, exclaimed, "Beer Garden! Why it is a fit place for the gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods." The beer garden never materialized, but the name stuck.[3]
In 2006 a dinosaur species discovered there, was named after the park: Theiophytalia kerri.

I like this painting, Nancy. It reminds me of a trip we took there when our kids were young. Those people in there may be us...Great work!

I really like the people in this painting. They give a wonderful sense of scale.

Thank you all. Yes, I had to put those people in there (Cheri, is that you in there?) - I really wanted to show the scale of those rocks. I'd like to redo this one with knives - I bet the rock texture would be really enhanced.
