Dahlia

This is my submission for the Rookie Painter challenge #9. I loved the image, the softness of the dahlia petals. I love growing Dahlia's - their flowers are so beautiful & delicate.

I have set a rule for myself with all of these internet challenges. I need to alter all reference images from their original, in some form or another, so that I can "make it my own." That being said, I wasn't sure how to alter this one to follow that new rule.

Well, it really came down to a decision. Do I paint it life like? Or do I go for more impressionism - I think you can see which one I went with.

Still lovely, Nancie. I love the colors of pinks and reds in the deep recesses of the dahlia. I also love that hint of table in the distance!

The colors are beautiful. One thing I TRY to do when I paint from photos is to improve the composition usually by changing the cropping or the angles.

I like your interpretation of the dahlia and the nice progression of color. It's got an Andy Warhol feel to this! Good job!

Thank you for your comments. Sherry, you picked up on that hint of table! Barbara, I agree with you. I usually change the crop on things - this one, I liked how the original photo had the flower off-center, so I chose to keep it. Rebecca, thank you for that Andy Warhol comment - it made me smile!
