Barn with knives

My first attempt at painting with palette knife, and I think I've found a new love. I always liked the look of knife paintings -- so loosely done with texture & color. I've stored away in the back of my mind that I would try it one day. And the day finally came.

Before I painted this I did roam the internet looking for information on palette knife painting. I didn't find any books at Barnes & Noble for specific palette knife, so I bought nothing there. I did find quite a few videos on You Tube, and they were very helpful. Some gave information (such as the different knife shapes & what they are used for). Some were only quick demonstrations of someone using the knife - but that helped me understand how to hold & how to make some strokes.

I plan to do more of these now. I don't think I will do all my paintings with knives. Only those that I think the technique will enhance. Also, a thicker paint is helpful with knives - either I'll need to use oils or I plan to try working with the Heavy Body Liquitex paints only. Perhaps add some mediums or thickeners to the acrylic.

This is acrylic on 8x10, gallery wrapped canvas. (and yes I painted the sides with the knife, and yes, I wound up wearing quite a bit of the paint!) LOL.

Oh this is quite lovely, Nancie! The colors, the mood, the texture...Just exquisite! I love palette knife paintings. Two of my favorite palette knife painters are Ann Gorbett and Tamy Hext...Check them out (they are on the side bar of my blog)! Ann just started a palette knife painters blog too (and the link is in her blog).

Hey Nancie-this is a terrific painting. You'd never know it was your first with a palette knife. I hope to see more. Thanks for visiting my blog. I see Sherry may have steered you there-that was nice of her.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I love palette knife paintings, and I so enjoyed creating this one. I do intend to do more, I just love the style of knife paintings so much. Ann, I did find your blog on Sherry's recommendation (her blog has steered me to so many artists and for that, Sherry, I thank you!). Martine - thank you for your comments, and I'm glad you loved the mood within the painting. It is something that become more evident to me as I painted.
